We are happy to share the success of our recent event, ALIAWest Library Carpentry Taster. Held on 17th August at TL Robertson Library, Curtin University, this gathering exceeded all expectations, drawing a full house of attendees.
A Packed House
The event began with participants filling the venue almost to capacity. From the moment the doors opened, it was clear that this would be a special day. The diverse crowd, comprising librarians, researchers, students, industry professionals, brought together a wealth of knowledge, experience, and curiosity looking to expand their skillset.
Engaging Content that Captivated the Audience
With the unusual session, (Library Carpentry is usually delivered in 1 or 2 day workshops), the presenters endeavoured to give an indication of how data skills can be useful in our work environments. This meant that the agenda was packed with content designed to engage and educate. The session covered an overview of data management before diving into coding using Python and R.
Fabulous Presenters Who Inspired
Our presenters were fabulous. The time they took to design the two hour session from a days workshop was much appreciated by our Committee.
- John kicked off the event with a keynote on Data and why it matters.
- Drew took us throughthe exercises for Python, showing how easy it is to set up repeatable scenarios, thereby saving time later on.
- Claire took us through R, another coding language, which highlighted the similarities and divergences between it and Python.
- The session closed with a short demonstration of Wikimedia and its graphic representation of datasets.
A Day to Remember
We are grateful to everyone who attended, participated, and contributed to making this event such a success. A special thank you goes out to our presenters for sharing their knowledge and passion.
