ARLWA October event
On Tuesday 6th October the Academic and Research
Library Group held an event titled “Libraries make Spaces: Repurposing our
Libraries”.

We had a larger than usual turnout, with attendees from all library
sectors, highlighting that this is currently a hot topic.

Lynne Vautier from Curtin University spoke passionately on the
concept of “Universal Design” and how this should be included in any new
projects or refurbishment.

Steve McQuade showed a virtual tour of Edith Cowan’s Library space,
prompting a lot of interest in the sleeping pods they’ve recently installed.

Murdoch Library’s Ghylene Palmer presented on how they had to “think
smart” to enhance their student spaces on a limited budget, winning an award
from their Student Guild for their outdoor courtyard.

And finally Andrew Kelly took us into the “Twilight Zone” to tell us
about Makerspaces and how he was using workshops, activities and events to
connect with his community in the Town of Victoria Park.

As always we’re very grateful to our speakers for their contributions.
Interesting presentations on a thought provoking topic!
