Round up – Library Carpentry Day

by | Feb 10, 2026 | ALIA in WA, PD Scheme

Friday the 6th February saw a full classroom of library people arrive to engage in a full day session, getting to grips with Python and all the extra goodies.

Starting with ensuring everyone was up and running with all the basics loaded and working, we then moved onto the basics, including variables, lists, built in functions, libraries and pandas (no, not those pandas, worst luck!).

The lunch break gave everyone a chance to stretch their legs and wander round the campus before looping overs datasets, using pandas and conditionals….

Tidying data was the last thing of the day before some people joining a library tour.

While it all sounds terribly confusing and so much geek speak, everyone enjoyed the day and left feeling hopeful about sorting issues out back at work, or creating new ways of doing things!

The Carpentries are built to make data more accessible and help workplaces streamline processes clean data and provide visualisations beyond the ordinary.  In a world where libraries have to prove their worth, this is one way to help that objective.

ALIAWest would like to extend out thanks to John Brown and Drew Fordham for running our workshop and Curtin University Library for hosting us and releasing John and Drew to work with us.

A huge Thank You to all who attended and participated in the session.  We loved hosting and seeing you all.  We also hope to see you at another session in the future.

One last note!  The Value of Us Conference hosted by ALIAWest is being held on the 17th – 18th September at the State Library of Western Australia.  Calls for Abstracts will be opening soon, and we hope you will consider presenting.  Our aim is to share a diverse range of subjects (with no particular theme) from the GLAMR sector and our related outlier groups of Associations, Societies and Groups that exist across WA.
